Switchable graphics vga on laptop

ATI Switchable™ Graphics Technology with Maximum Performance, Long Battery Life, Seamless Experience.

ATI is working hard to offer GPU / VGA to Intel with Switchable graphics feature for notebooks.
Intel will Switchable VGA to open systems, where ATI VGA can work when the laptop connect to the power socket / adapter. When using a notebook computer battery, then re-handle the internal VGA display screen. AMD itself has a switchable system with Puma platform, but AMD will offer also to Intel's Centrino notebook has a VGA so the better.

The latest trend in power management is delivered by AMD's energy-efficient technology, ATI™ Switchable Graphics1. Imagine combining the low power advantages of an integrated graphics processor with the performance of a discrete graphics processor. With ATI Switchable Graphics now you can have the best of both worlds with maximum performance when you need it and long battery life when on-the-go.

This innovative feature is a mobile graphics switching process optimizing your system for either high-powered graphics processing or low power consumption. It is designed to dynamically switch the graphics operation between Intel® integrated graphics and
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3400 series, ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3600 series or ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4000 series2 discrete graphics (depending on the power source and user preferences) without rebooting the notebook. This allows the discrete card to be used for graphics intensive applications when under AC power (plugged in to power socket) and the integrated graphics to be used in battery mode, extending battery life when on-the-go and without compromising The Ultimate Visual Experience™. Industry Leading Cooperative Graphics Solution

AMD is dedicated to driving open innovation on all platforms and has collaborated to co-develop ATI Switchable Graphics for Intel based platforms. It is the only revolutionary solution available that supports the Intel® Centrino 2 processor, offering true power savings or full GPU performance. This enables dynamic switching between Intel® integrated graphics and ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD Premium graphics delivering an exclusive notebook technology that no one can resist. Extreme Power Savings for Long Battery Life

ATI Switchable Graphics technology3 is the next stage in the evolution of graphics processing. Maximize your battery life while on-the-go when you switch from discrete to integrated graphics. As compared to discrete graphics, an integrated GPU requires less energy to operate, yielding better power efficiency and improved battery life. This makes it better suited for situations where your notebook is running on battery - for example when traveling on the road.
Maximum Performance

When the notebook is plugged in to the power socket, ATI Switchable Graphics enables the ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD Premium graphics processor for astonishing performance. The discrete graphics processor delivers high performance and incredible 3D graphics when your notebook is plugged in. And the power of your ATI Mobility Radeon discrete graphics processor allows you to enjoy superior HD gaming, Blu-ray movies and other HD content in full HD-1080p on your HD-capable monitor. Whether you use it at home, in the office, or while on the move, ATI Switchable Graphics helps you meet your every need.

The traditional notebook trade-off is now a thing of the past. With ATI Switchable Graphics revolutionary technology you now have the flexibility to run demanding graphics application while plugged in or switch to integrated graphics when on battery mode. When the notebook is working on battery life the discrete graphics processor dynamically shuts off, resulting in low idle power, long battery life and improved energy efficiency. Resume maximum performance by simply plugging in the notebook to a power socket and watch your discrete graphics seamlessly kick in for The Ultimate Visual Experience™. The system monitors the power source and switches GPU based on power source and user preferences. It's a simplified process delivering unsurpassed flexibility. ( source: www.amd.com. )

Graphic systems such as the switch has been implemented on some Sony Vaio notebook that came out was almost a year ago. This notebook is to use two VGA, namely Intel and Nvidia Geforce. But, on this Vaio notebooks, the switch is done manually. There are two modes of selection, namely the Speed and Stamina. In Speed mode, VGA GeForce active, whereas in Stamina mode using Intel GMA 950.

from ATI HD 5650 to Intel HD, but I cannot switch back to ATI. Then I have to go to bios and made discrete mode only then reinstall ATI drivers and so on?

It started working properly then I installed latest programs and drivers from acer site for my model like VGA_Intel, Application Intel, ePower Acer and update BIOS. I guess it was all about intel drivers and their ability to switch graphic back to ATI.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 does not support Switchable Graphics Technology. This is a limitation of the Windows XP operating system. VGA driver cannot be loaded until the display mode in BIOS is changed to Discrete.

To resolve this, please follow the below steps.

1. Update the BIOS to version
The BIOS can be downloaded from the Drivers and Downloads area.
2. After the BIOS has been updated, reboot the system and press F2 to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3. Change the "Switchable graphics" setting to "Discrete".
4. Save changes and exit.
5. Reboot the computer. The ATI VGA driver can now be installed.

So.. Can you even use the ATI card while unplugged? What if I want to go to a friends house and show off my awesome graphics card? It's not like I need a ton of battery life to do that. Plus, I have some graphics intensive games that I can play in 30 min to 2 hours bursts between recharges. I understand that I will have less time to use the card, but I would still like to have the functionality when on the go.
